I was delighted to be asked by the organisers of The Office Management/PA Show & Confex to speak at their event today, all about the practicalities of setting up your own VA business. The Office Management/PA Show

I thought I’d share some of the more common questions I get asked at these kind of events or on my webinars and PA to VA Cardiac Clinics:

How many years experience do I need?
I’d say 3-5 top level experience. You’re offering your skills as a PA out to the business community and you need to be competent in what services you’re offering.

What is the most helpful thing you can advise in the set up stage?
Know what you want to achieve, set your SPECIFIC goals and outcomes. Take your time and do it right. Work hard on building strong foundations for your business.

How do I get clients and transition from my current job into my VA position part-time?
Look to subcontract out to Associate VAs to enable you to build your client base whilst you’re still employed. Put money aside so that when you do leave your job, you have money to fall back on. Set a goal for leaving your employment (make it a specific date, e.g. 1st August 2016) and work back over by putting the necessary steps in place to enable you to reach your goal of leaving your employment.

What new skills does a VA need to learn?
It’s taken as a given that you have the necessary skills to offer PA/admin services to business owners. For additional services that you’re looking to offer and have very little skill in that area, then look to attend training courses or webinars to gain the knowledge and the skill necessary. Also see what you can learn from searching the internet.

How do I ‘sell’ myself?
You shouldn’t have to ‘sell’, the important thing is to get the benefits of using your services across to your prospects. Think in the mind of your prospect. What’s in it for them? Why should they work with you?

These are just a few of the questions I get asked regularly. If you have a burning question about setting up your own VA business, feel free to email me at angela@the-VA-doctor.co.uk and I’ll be happy to help.
